I got a couple suggestions here.

For external harddrives it says 100-200GB? HDs can be purchased from ~80GB up to 1TB. Although the 1TB are not very common yet, but up to 750GB the drives are very easy to find in stores. That is a lot more storage than 200GB.

Besides tapes there is another expensive way for backup. Well, not the tape itself is the expensive part but the necessary hardware. The Drobo from Data Robotics can host 4 HDs which are handled like a RAID system except that HDs can have different size. Unlike in a RAID all available storage is added up, nothing is lost. Disadvantage, not really cheap (the case w/out HDs comes at 500$US) and only USB2 as of now.

Similar but even more expensive, therefore availability up to Dual Gigabit Ethernet etc. the solution from Infrant Technologies. Check the ReadyNas from Infrant Technologies.

The nice thing is, even though it's expensive, there is no configuration required. You can just add a new HD without any configuration needed but with RAID protection. You don't need to be an IT person to operate these devices. However, due to the high cost it's probably more geared towards a smaller base rather than for private use. Unless, of course, someone has very valuable data to protect.
